Carrickfergus Castle
Landmark
Open Details
Carrickfergus Castle was built by an Anglo-Norman petty king in 1177 as his headquarters. It was virtually impenetrable because at one time three quarters of the perimeter was surrounded by water. It played a significant military role up to 1928 and is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Ireland. A new roof has been added to the top of the tower hall, and it is still possible to walk through the structure.
Today, there are interesting historical displays and cannons from the 17th and 19th centuries, so enjoy exploring this ancient fortress and the weapons used to defend it.
