    Day Trip in Mosonmagyaróvár, Hungary

We began our second day visiting the Gothic tower in Bratislava, which was originally part of a Franciscan church. After examining its beautiful carved design, we took a walk in the park which surrounds this beautiful creation.
Our next destination was the famous Bratislava Castle, where we explored its history, and the life of a goldsmith and silversmith worker. The, we walked along the courtyard and admired the beautifully designed gardens.
We then continue our journey, to Hungary. After a short 35-minute drive, we arrived at this charming city called Mosonmagyaróvár. First, we visited a beautifully designed and decorated church, which is also home to the final resting place of Archduke Friedrich Habsburg and his wife. Then we had a delicious traditional lunch in a cosy, welcoming traditional Hungarian restaurant.
The next visiting point was the Óvari Castle. Here, we learned about the history of the castle and the city and explored the surrounding park. Finally, we checked into the hotel, then we went to the spa where we spent a nice relaxing afternoon.
We closed the day with a nice dinner in a nearby restaurant.

After the delicious breakfast in the hotel, we began our day with this beautiful Gothic tower. Originally, it was a Franciscan church tower, which was built in the 15th century by Michael Chnam. The upper part of the tower was rebuilt in a Neogothic style after an earthquake in 1897. The architect was Friedrich Schulek. The original top was placed in Janko Kráľ Park.
We took some time to admire this incredibly carved building, then we enjoyed a short walk in the park.

Next, we headed to the city’s most famous landmark, the Castle. Walking to the top is short and a bit challenging. But once we were there, the beautiful scenery of the city and the Danube is in front of you. And the breathtaking view is worth it.
Originally, this place was inhabited by Celts who founded a settlement called Oppidum. The castle was built between the 9th century and 17th century by the Great Moravian Empire. During its history, it was rebuilt several times.
We began exploring the Castle Museum and immersed ourselves in its history from the Middle Ages until the present day. Under the main gate, we found the Treasury. One of the main features is the collection of goldsmith and silversmith works. The items gave us an insight into the masters’ artistic skills, styles, and craftsmanship.
Then we visited the inner courtyard which contains beautifully designed formal gardens. We really enjoyed the walk and the romantic atmosphere.

We continue our journey to another neighboring country, Hungary. Mosonmagyaróvár is only a 40 minutes’ drive.
We begin our discovery with a beautiful church which is situated on a nice walking street. Around the building you can see a beautiful garden and statue from the king St. László, and a fresh water drinking fountain.
Originally, it was built as a Romanesque Gothic stone church after 1260. After been destroyed by the Turkish army, it was rebuilt in 1668 in an Italian Baroque style. The church has a tower with a clock and a bell from 1923.
As we were walking in, we found an impressive interior decoration featuring the characteristics of Baroque design. The magnificent articulate and decorative elements, as well as the painted architecture gave us a breathtaking visual experience.
We explored beautiful paintings from saints featuring scenes from their life as well as periodic symbolsim. The stained-glass windows from the 19th century also featuring important saints such as the patron of the city St. John of Nepomuk. The richly decorated altars with columns, carvings, and a group of golden statues featuring different saints again such as St. Florian who was a Roman centurion and martyr.
Next, we head to the choir which is quite large. Its cornice is decorated with angels holding a musical instruments. Here, we find an organ which was originally built in Vienna in 1768, and it was professionally restored by the expert Szakolczay-Riegler Ernő in 1938. As I used to sing here, I know that the sound of the organ and the acoustic of the church is just incredible.
Finally, we visited the crypt which was consecrated in 1936. The entrance is opposite the parish building. We entered through the decorative Neo Baroque door where again we found an impressive interior decoration which contains plaster rosettes and many sculptural elements. In the middle section there is a carved marble altar which is guarding the relics of Bishop St. Adalbert and the martyr and former Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Beckett. The crypt is also the final resting place of Archduke Friedrich Habsburg and his wife Isabella. Their white marble emblems are richly carved in a Neo-baroque style.
We really enjoyed this place, and it was refreshing to revisit a place which was a major part of my childhood.
The church is open during the day between the first and the last mass. More info here.

After lunch, we went to the famous castle which has a long and difficult history. Its construction began in 1364 on the remains of a Roman settlement. It was renovated several times until 1819, when the castle got its todays Art Nouveau form.
During its history, the castle changed ownership several times when finally, it gave home to an agricultural higher education institution which was founded by Prince Albert Kázmér of Saxe-Teschen in 1818. This institution now is the Faculty of Agriculture, University of West Hungary. We also visited its historical museum where we learned more about the institution`s past.
In the courtyard we found the bust, and memorial bench of the poet Nikolaus Lenau who was also the former student between 1822 and 1823. We also came across monuments from the First and Second World War and the 1956 revolution. The events of the II World War and 1956 revolution is close to my heart as my grandparents were involved and told me so many stories how they survived these dreadful times.
The irregular rectangular shaped building is surrounded by its preserved fortifications, its cellar system, the castle garden (previously a moat filled with water), the castle bridge with the castle gate, the castle lake and the Lajta river. There is also another building which stands here called St Anna's Chapel which was built to commemorate the 1713s plague.
Finally, we also took a walk in the surrounding park and enjoyed its beautiful nature.

After changing into our swimming suits and robes, we headed to the Spa to try its famous thermal water treatments.
The thermal well was established between 1965 and 1966, then shortly after the Spa was erected in 1968. In the beginning, it was used by the public for bathing and home treatment. The director of the Municipal District Hospital Dr Imre Fekete and the chief of rheumatology Dr Pál Peter founded research to test the water for medicinal effects. The results were highly promising. The professional medical examination explored that thermal water could treat musculoskeletal illnesses, inflammatory joint and muscle diseases, and inflammatory gynaecological diseases. In the form of inhalation, it is used for bronchitis, certain lung diseases, and illnesses of the nasal pharynx and sinuses.
This medicinal wonder can be used as a drinking cure for the treatment of gastroenterological diseases. Other benefits are preventing tooth decay in children due to its fluoride content, treating certain thyroid diseases, and helping at beginning of calcification of blood vessels.
This incredible thermal water is recognized as medicinal mineral water by the National Public Health Institute.
Although I knew about this place since I was a child, it is renovated and expanded since I was here. We really enjoyed the swimming and sauna. I also took one of the treatments which was an aromatic refreshing massage.

After the relaxing afternoon, we went to this cozy restaurant which is situated in the opposite side of the hotel. The menu is incredible. It offers a wide range of food and also the Hungarian specialties are highlighted which make it easier to find them. I love all kind of food, but my recommendation is any Hungarian soup, and deer and duck dishes. If you like river fish, I highly recommend trying them as they are delicious.
