Las Médulas, a Surprising Landscape
Ready for the second day on the road? The idea of this day is to get to know one of the most striking sites in the province of Castilla y León: the Médulas.
This landscape originated from the exploitation of gold since Roman times. With the passing of time, the landscape that we enjoy today was formed.
Along the walk through Las Médulas you can see viewpoints, go hiking and visit a lake where you can have a swim if the weather is good.
Before returning to León, you will pass through the small town of Villafranca del Bierzo.

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, get ready to drive to the Médulas area. There are several ways of getting to know Las Médulas. One of them is to first visit the Visitor Reception Centre Las Médulas.
You can leave the car there.
The centre will give you information and you can also hire a guided tour, although you can do the visit on your own. You can find more information about the guided tours at this website. In the centre you can also watch a video to see what mining was like.
From the Interpretation Centre begins the Sendero de las Valiñas, which is the most traditional trail to follow. It is about 4 km long (round trip) in total and can be covered in an hour and a half or less, depending on how many times you stop to take photographs. Other longer routes are possible, but this is the most traditional one.
Note: You can ask here for the entrance to the Orellán galleries, which you will walk through at the end of the route.
