This small wine-growing town in the southeast of Luxembourg, very close to the point where the borders of Germany, France and Luxembourg meet, is well known for the beauty of the lakes fed by the Moselle River.
Weather permitting you can go swimming, sunbathing, nature walking, boating, paddle boarding, paddle surfing and outdoor activities in Baggerweieren. Domaines Vinsmoselle is the largest producer of wine and crémant in Luxembourg. But... what is a Crémant? It is a sparkling wine that is made using the traditional method - the champenoise method (with secondary fermentation in the bottle), but they cannot use this name because it is limited to the Champagne appellation.
Since 1921, this wine cooperative, which brings together 240 winegrowers from various localities along the meandering Moselle River (from Schengen to Wasserbillig), has been producing wines of excellent quality that have won prizes in various international competitions.
The Caves des Vignerons de Wellenstein was founded in 1930. Today, this site is the largest and most important of the four domaines that make up Domaines Vinsmoselle. The archaeological remains of the luxurious Roman villa of Echternach are considered to be one of the most important buildings of the Roman period north of the Alps. It was located in the northwestern provinces of the Roman Empire.
In this ostentatious house you can experience the comfortable lifestyle of its owners centuries ago. The Basilica of St. Willibrord in Echternach is a 7th century Benedictine monastery well known for its traditional Christian dancing procession that dates back to 1100 and is held annually every Pentecost Tuesday. About 8000 dancers come out in groups to the sound of chanting - something unique!
The basilica, whose present design dates from the 11th and 13th centuries, was badly damaged during the Battle of the Bulge (1944-1945) in World War II and was rebuilt in Romanesque Renaissance style.
The crypt has beautiful frescoes and a magnificent white marble sarcophagus containing the remains of St. Willibrord, English apostle of the Frisians and founder of the abbey of Echternach. Other points of interest are its garden, the Orangerie and the elegant pavilion.
Echternach is one of the main religious, cultural and artistic centers of Luxembourg.
