Land of Conquest that has survived and reinvented itself
Basilicata tells of its glorious past through its uniqueness. Land of conquest by the Byzantines, the Swabians, the Normans, the French, the Spanish, the Bourbons and even the Briganti...
Basilicata has survived and all the marks that these peoples left behind are still evident today.

Old Rustic Filled Houses (Palmenti)
Landmark
Open Details
Pietragalla is another small town in Basilicata that is very famous for its palmenti. These small, grass-covered buildings will make you feel like you are living inside the fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but if you sharpen your sense of smell, you will smell the aroma of wine, Lucanian traditions and peasant culture.
Palmenti are medieval structures where grape crushing and must fermentation took place. Carved out of sandstone rock and wedged between the vines, the 200 or so palmenti in Pietragalla are a true testament to how interesting Lucanian history is.
Remember to leave your car in the parking lots in town and walk to the palmenti: it will only take you a few minutes, you'll enjoy the view and you won't have to look for any parking.

Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Canius Bishop
Church
Open Details
Acerenza Cathedral is considered the greatest Romanesque architectural representation in the entire Mediterranean. Similar to the abbey of Cluney in France, it was built in the 11th century at the time when the Normans drove out the Lombards and conquered much of southern Italy. Built on the remains of an early Christian church, it has a Latin cross plan with three naves and today honors St. Mary of the Assumption and St. Canio, the patron saint of the town.
Acerenza's bell tower was erected four centuries later, in the 1500s, and is characterized by the presence of sarcophagus parts from Roman times.
Visit the crypt and the paintings that adorn its ceiling: they are from 1520 and mix the Christian and classical traditions, depicting both Christ the Confessor and sirens and fauns playing the flute.
