This one day trip will bring you to the Baroque city of Ludwigsburg. Here, you travel back in time to explore and learn about the history and life of the royal family. In 1709, Duke Eberhard Ludwig decided to build a city around his palace. The duke’s architect Donato Giuseppe Frisoni designed the city. Even today, Ludwigsburg still retains its unified streets, traditional buildings, Baroque marketplace, and avenues lined with chestnut and linden trees.
But let’s see what you will do during this exciting day. First you visit the Residential Palace. Here, you explore the history and life of the royal family through various exhibitions. Then, you check out the beautiful ceramic collection and get a glimpse of the courtly dining culture. Next, you gain an insight of fashion from the 18th century, then discover the original decoration such as furniture and clocks. You'll continue to explore the different artworks from well-known artists, such as their paintings and sculptures. While you are admiring the place, you'll see unique features of the palace, such as the wine cellar and the secret places that were once used by the servants. Finally, you'll stop outside and admire the unique architectural features of the building.
Next, you head to the city centre. Stroll across the old square and admire the historical buildings. Then explore the beautiful fountain and the statue from Duke Eberhart Louis.
Continue your journey to the palace park called Blühendes Barock. Enjoy the varied garden world. Admire its features such as the colourful flowers, trees, sculptures, monuments, lakes and fountains. Finally, step inside the fairy tale world and meet its creatures.
Your last destination is the Monrepos Lakeside Palace. Enjoy a walk in its park, then a romantic boat ride on its lake, and finally the landscape garden, which is one of the few remaining in south-West Germany.

Welcome at your first destination, which is one of the largest Baroque palaces in Germany. The interior is just as impressive as the building itself.
In 1704, construction began on the main part of the building, which was to be used as a hunting lodge for Duke Eberhard Ludwig. By 1718, the palace became the main residence of the family, so it needed to be extended, which was done by 1733. The result was a four wing complex enclosing a square. Also, an outstanding feature of the building is its roof with its handmade plain tiles and contoured silhouettes.
It offers visitors a wide variety of exhibitions and museums which bring you through the centuries from Baroque to Rococo and finally Neoclassical period. But what kind of exhibitions does the palace host? Let’s check it out.
The Keramikmuseum (Ceramics Museum) with its large collection displays a combination of Ludwigsburg porcelain and contemporary ceramic art from the Renaissance to present day. Admire the richly decorated sets which give a glimpse of the courtly dining culture or the collection of Italian Maiolica painted with figurative motifs from mythology and the Bible.
The Modemuseum (Fashion Museum) in the banquet hall showcases clothing between the 18th and 20th century. Learn about the history of beauty, hygiene and daily life.
Duke Carl Eugen’s private apartments, which contain original decor including rare and valuable furniture as well as accessories. Some pieces are from Paris.
The Barockgalerie (Baroque Gallery) displays historical works by a variety of artists.
The lapidarium has a collection of sandstone sculpture of gods, nymphs, heroes and mythical creatures. They once decorated this Baroque residence, but they moved inside to protect them. Explore the beautifully designed sculptures that created by a variety of important artists from the Württemberg court.
In the Kinderreich the young visitors can experience the life 300 years ago by dressing up, using the displays, and learning about the Duke’s court life.
There is also a photo exhibition about the life of the royal family in the former bathroom of the last member of the royal family Olga zu Schaumburg-Lippe who lived at Ludwigsburg Residential Palace until her death.
As you are exploring this spectacular place you also find the Marmorsaal (marble hall) flooded with light which reflects the splendor of the royal court. You can also find one of Europe’s oldest theatres in the eastern wing, the Schlosstheater (palace theater) from 1758, which preserves almost intact stage machinery and decorations.
Under the gaming pavilion and houses you come across the ducal wine cellar which contains the largest barrel in Württemberg, with a capacity of 90,000 liters.

Gardens in Ludwigsburg
Theme Park
Open Details
The park that surrounds the palace on the three sides also reflects the Baroque style. Originally, the garden was built in 1704 by Eberhard Ludwig. It was gradually improved throughout its history and finally opened to the public in 1828. In 1954, the palace’s gardens were reconstructed to commemorate its 250th birthday, partly maintaining historical plans, but also with new elements inspired by Baroque designs.
Walk in the south, where you will find a French-style garden with straight paths, arbors, topiaries, and flawlessly trimmed hedges culminating in a round lake with fountains. Originally, it was created in 1707 as a pleasure garden designed by Nette.
There's more Baroque style in the north garden, which is beside Schloss Favorite, where you find more dainty broderie on white beds which are trimmed with flowers. This is the oldest part, which built between 1704 and 1709. The galleries and pavilions were added between 1712 and 1715.
Continue to the Lower East Garden where you come across an English landscape combined with Medieval romantic elements. It was created by Duke Friedrich II around 1800. You find a variety of features here such as the Ice Valley, the Emichsburg castle, Emichsee lake, the menagerie, and the Großer See (large lake). The landscape is filled with the combination of trees, flowers, shrubs, ferns and grasses which gives a natural style and beautiful colours to the garden.
Finally, you arrived to the Märchengarten (Fairy-Tale Garden). It is a magical place on its own. As you step inside through the iron gate a fairy tale world awaits you filled with kings, princesses, giants, and witches.
Enjoy the romantic settings where the formal garden blend in with the wild nature. Discover enchanted relics and the allure of the past. Immerse yourself in the world of harmony and stillness.
