After the fire of 1405 it served as a prison for prostitutes and later as an observation tower. Finally in 1530 this magnificent astronomical clock was installed, which begins to move its characters 3 minutes before each hour, attracting tourists not to miss the show. Hurry up! Don't miss it!

Have you been good? Bern's child-eating statue has been terrorizing children since its construction in 1546. It is one of Bern's oldest fountains and the true intention of its statue is unknown.
There are 3 theories: One theory, the most disgusting, is that it was built as a warning to Bern's Jewish community, since the statue's hat is very similar to the ones Jews were forced to wear at that time.
Another theory is that this ogre is the representation of the titan Cronus, who according to Greek mythology, eats his children so they do not usurp his throne.
The last theory holds that it is the older brother of Bertoldo V of Zährigen, founder of the city, who out of jealousy of having been eclipsed by his younger brother went mad and this led him to eat the children of the city. Most likely the sculpture was simply a way of reminding the children of Bern to behave themselves.

The capital of a country is usually associated with a large metropolis, but Bern provides the sensation of being in a peaceful and not so crowded city on the outskirts.
According to tradition, the city is so named because Duke Bertoldo V of Zähringen hunted a bear in the area while he was looking for a place to settle the city. That is why the figure of the bear (Bär in German) has been associated with this city since its foundation in 1191.
The Zähringerbrunnen, a famous fountain with a bear wearing armor, was built in 1535 as a monument to its founder.
Most of Bern's fountains are more than 450 years old, and together with the Old Town they have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
These fountains were originally built to supply the city with potable water, to water the animals and some were also used for washing clothes. They were places for social gatherings, where people could get informed about events and rumors. Today they are still the preferred meeting point for locals to get together.
