Hohenzollernburg Castle and the Source of the Danube on the Way to the Spa Resort on Lake Constance

Hohenzollern Castle is the ancestral seat of the German imperial house of Hohenzollern. The castle cannot be overlooked. It rises on a mountain cone that towers over the landscape, visible from afar. It is already the third castle that stands on this place. The first castle probably dates back to the 11th century. During the Thirty Years' War the second castle fell into the hands of the Württemberger. After the Hohenzollerns managed to recapture it by a trick, French troops occupied it during the War of the Austrian Succession. After that it fell into disrepair. At the beginning of the 19th century, the then crown prince and later king Frederick William IV had the castle rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style.
It consists of fortifications, the castle building, chapels and the castle garden. The castle was never inhabited for a long time. It served mainly for representation. Only the last Prussian crown prince Wilhelm lived in the castle for a few months after his escape from Potsdam at the end of 1945.

From the parking lot, a partially steep footpath with stairs (about 25 minutes) leads to the castle entrance, the Adlertor.
There is also a shuttle bus (stop next to the parking lot store). From the Adlertor to the castle courtyard you then have to walk 350 meters uphill. The path is cobblestone in places. Running times: daily from 10:00 - 18:30.
Tickets for the castle are available online. The fee for the shuttle bus is already included in the entrance fee.
Guided tours You can visit the castle on your own with an app-guide, which you can download to your smartphone.
Alternatively, on quieter days, there are guided tours of the castle that last about 45 minutes.

You can take a lunch break in the Castle Restaurant. There they serve daily between 11:30 and 17:30 warm cuisine and coffee and cake. In the castle there is a beer garden and a café restaurant.
If it is too crowded there, you can also enjoy Swabian specialties like Maultaschen, Spätzle or Zwiebelrostbraten at the Hofgut Domäne.

At this parking lot buses, cars and campers can park free of charge and for an unlimited time.

The water that comes out of this place is rainwater that flows underground from the Black Forest to the edge of the mountains. This spring is one of several springs in and around the castle park. The spring water flows underground through the castle park and flows into the Brigach River 100 meters further on at the Danube Temple. This is the beginning of the course of the Danube to the mouth of the river in the Black Sea.

On a walk through Donaueschingen Castle Park, you can stroll along the Brigach River. Stroll past the Princely Fürstenberg Collections to the Diana Fountain and follow the path on the left along the Brigach to the Danube Temple and back to the parking lot.
If you are not interested in relaxing in a sauna paradise and swimming in Lake Constance, you can extend your walk through the castle park.

Indulge yourself with modern Euro-Asian cuisine in the hotel restaurant Rubin. Emphasis is placed on seasonal and regional ingredients. This is accompanied by excellent wines, including many from wineries in the region. To guarantee guests a relaxed and undisturbed enjoyment, there are fixed dining times.
