A New and an Old Castle

Lichtenstein Castle is an example from the Romantic period. Originally, there was a knight's castle on this place from the 14th century. However, this fell into disrepair over the centuries after the last owner from the House of Lichtenstein died in 1687. He had left no descendants. When chivalry aroused renewed interest in the 19th century during the Romantic period, Wilhelm Graf von Württemberg, later Duke of Urach, bought the ruin. He had it rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style into the castle that today rises 817 meters above the valley of the Echaz.

The park is accessible. The castle can be visited only with a guided tour. Guided tours take place every day throughout the day approximately every 20 minutes.

The Old Forester's House is located just a few steps away from Lichtenstein Castle. In summer you can dine not only in the inn, but also in the beer garden. The cuisine at the Alte Forsthaus emphasizes regional ingredients and serves Swabian specialties from the region, as well as international and modern dishes. Cakes and bread come from the in-house bakery.

At the parking lot near Lichtenstein Castle pick up your car for the onward journey.

The sight of the Hohenzollern Castle in Sigmaringen is breathtaking. Sigmaringen Castle is the largest of all Danube castles. It is the seat of the administration of the Princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and is still partly used as the residence of the princely family.
The first castle complex was built on this rock in the 11th century. In the 2nd half of the 15th century, the then owner, Count of Werdenberg, had the building expanded to the size it still has today. Since the middle of the 16th century, the castle has belonged to the Hohenzollern dynasty of princes.
If you are interested in the persons of the high nobility who lived in the Hohenzollern Castle of Sigmaringen, it is worth taking one of the (themed) guided tours, if they are offered.

The castle can be visited independently at any time with audio guides. Guided tours are available at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm. The Hohenzollern Palace is a castle built on a high rock. For guests with limited mobility, the visit can be arduous. It is not possible to visit with a wheelchair.

In the restaurant Bootshaus Sigmaringen you can eat on the terrace with a view of Sigmaringen Castle when the weather is nice. Here they serve vegetarian dishes as well as Swabian classics, fish dishes or just a vesper.
