It purports to be the only building in the world made of rock salt. Traditionally, people stop by to take a look and also take a lick — yes, seriously. The town of Grand Saline, Texas, is known for its huge salt deposit and subsequent salt production. Naturally, the city erected a museum dedicated to and made of salt.

One thing east Texas has a lot of is gorgeous lake vistas. Tyler State Park is a nice place to get out, stretch those legs, and take some snaps of the lake and local bird wildlife — it's a birdwatching haven.

The former Planters Bank & Mercantile building in downtown Jefferson, Texas was transformed by a pair of musicians who hatched a plan for a restaurant while staying at a family lake house nearby. They cooked up a gorgeous dinner club that also serves lunch. The fried green tomatoes and hot honey chicken sandwich are sure to delight.

This stunning location is a repurposed "federal building" that the Jefferson Historical Society procured to host its collection of local historical artifacts in the 1960s. While the collection and exhibits are diverse, it can be a lot to get through, so allow some time to linger.
