Discovering the Beauty of Landsberg and Fussen

Depending on the time of the year, you should wear clothes according to the weather.
In winter, it is very cold with permanent snowfall, so gloves, a snow cap and a mackintosh are recommended. In summer, it is advisable to bring a coat, as the temperature drops considerably at night.
The landscape also changes according to the time of the year. In winter, you will find everything covered with snow, while in spring and summer the forest is dyed in different colors.
Make sure to fully charge your car before going on a road trip.

The first stop is in the town of Landsberg, for a tour of the historic city centre. Leave the car in the parking and walk for a few minutes.

Part of the old medieval city wall has been reconstructed, and this gateway is one of the most beautiful parts that remains.
Its architecture in the form of a defensive tower, with a large central clock and religious images, dazzles with its pastel tones and the different colors framing the small windows.
You can climb the tower to see the city from above, with the Alps in the background.

The Market Square is one of the jewels of the city, surrounded by low buildings painted in different colors and with its reddish roofs. It is the most atmospheric place in the city with cafés and restaurants.
One of the entrances to the square is the so-called lard tower, where in ancient times women traded lard in the shade of the tower, which prevented the lard from melting quickly.
When you look up you can see the roof that crowns the tower, a mixture of white, green, black and brown colors. Beautiful!

With its spotless light colors and large bell tower with beautiful architectural details, it is the most important Gothic church in the city.
If it dazzles on the outside, inside the details and works of art it contains are splendid. Frescoes in the vault, sculptures, multicolored stained-glass windows and the main altar, which is the real star of the place.
If you visit it on a Saturday morning, you will enjoy organ concerts.

The town hall is one of the most beautiful town halls in Germany, and is located on one side of the market square. It has a beautiful façade painted in shades of pink and yellow, with arches at the bottom, large windows and sculptures.
You are allowed to visit the interior, where you will find large murals by famous artists such as Von Herkomer.
The old rooms are also decorated with paintings, and there are often exhibitions of local artists in the lower part of the building.

After the tour of Landsberg, it is time to return to the car and continue the route.

A restaurant with the atmosphere of the old Bavarian taverns of the Middle Ages, even in the clothes worn by the staff – you can even eat with your hand if you like!
Among its star dishes is the grilled stilts. There are other typical German dishes, such as sausages with sauerkraut. There are even interesting options for vegans.
It's a perfect place to eat if you're travelling with your family, as the children are provided with coloring books to keep them entertained until the food is served. Dogs are also allowed in the restaurant if you are travelling with your dog.

Narrow streets, colorful facades and medieval buildings give Fussen a spectacular atmosphere for walking.
Reichen Street meets Ritter Street at this point, with plenty of restaurants and cafés to sit and watch the medieval scenery. In the middle, there is a large fountain.
This place is worth a walk both during the day and at night, when the medieval buildings are illuminated to create an atmosphere of great beauty.

Situated on top of a hill, there are beautiful views of the historic center of Fussen and even of the mountains and the lake, weather permitting.
From the medieval period, you enter the outer courtyard where there is a special feature: the windows that recreate the medieval period do not actually exist, but are 3D paintings on the wall.
Inside there is an art museum with exhibitions by various artists. It is worth a look.

This monastery was one of the most important in Germany for several centuries, starting with its construction in the 9th century. The visit includes places with excellent stucco decoration and frescoes, such as the Prince's Hall, where concerts are held today.
There is also a tour of the chapel and the beautiful library, a place you will fall in love with at first sight thanks to its large windows and frescoes on the ceiling.
To extend the visit, in the southern part of the monastery is the Fussen City Museum, dedicated to the history of the city and with exhibitions on the history of music, such as violin making.

On leaving the monastery, something will catch your eye. This tiny church used to be a former hospital. Its exterior decoration in rococo style surprises everyone.
Its reddish tones, the murals painted on the façade and the irregular triangular top with ornaments, are distinctive details of the religious enclosure. The interior has frescoes on the vaults with religious images and a small altar decorated with marble.
There are no fixed opening hours, just go to the entrance door and see if it is open.

Along the river Leich, there is a small path that leads to a panoramic viewpoint.
The turquoise water of the river together with the colorful leaves of the trees in spring or the white of the snow in winter create an ideal landscape for romantic photographs.
In the background, you can see some of Fussen's medieval buildings, such as the monastery of St. Mang.

Before dinner, it is worth taking another walk through the pedestrian streets of the historic center, but this time to admire the illuminated facades of the buildings.
It is a walk that will not take more than 45 minutes and where the colors of the medieval buildings stand out.

After the tour through Fussen is finished, it is time for dinner. This small restaurant is ideal for a romantic evening with red tablecloths, candlelight and red upholstered walls.
It is like going back in time to the taverns of the beginning of the 20th century.
Among the specialities are roasted Bavarian duck breast – a real treat! For dessert, the cottage cheese doughnuts with warm wild berries and homemade ice cream is recommended.
