Viking Games and Viking Ships

Take a unique stop in Drammen to the city's biggest (and probably oldest) tourist attraction, The Spiral Tunnel.
Spiraling 7 floors up inside the mountain, it leads up to Drammen's most epic viewpoint. And inside the tunnel, if you look closely, you will find a troll. The emblem of Drammen called Spiraltrollet.
On top of Spiraltoppen there is an ample free parking lot so that you can leave the car when you enjoy the views. If the café is open, why not try their delicious waffles with rømme (sour cream) and jam (the traditional way of eating waffles in Norway!)
There is a bench on the viewpoint where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the river, Drammenselva, and the city below with green pine forest climbing above the houses on the other side of the valley. There, you will also find the cannons that are fired every morning on Norway's National Day, the 17th of May.

One of the absolute coolest attractions along the Viking Trail in Vestfold is a visit to Midgard Vikingsenter. There, you can learn about the Vikings through exhibitions showcasing the history and try out different Viking activities like shooting with a bow and arrow.
You can also be lucky and arrive when they have outdoor theater plays from the Viking age - this is such a cool and unique place for the whole family!
Midgard Vikingsenter opens every day at 11:00. You can check the exact closing times for your dates on their official website in case you choose to change around on the travel itinerary and go there later in the day.

Next to Midgard Vikingsenter is one of the most important cultural heritage sites in Norway, the Borre Burial Mounds which were in use between the years 600 and 900.
To give you an idea of how grand these burial mounds are, they are compiled of 7 large graves and 21 smaller graves. You can only imagine what lives the persons buried here must have lived.

Stop for lunch at this lovely Pizza & Grill. It might not look fancy, but the food is absolutely delightful and the staff will make you feel at home. There is nothing on the menu that isn't worth trying, so you can order away to fuel up for the rest of the day.

In 1904, one of the most impressive Viking ships was found in the Oseberg Burial Mound outside Tønsberg.
While the original ship and several of the artifacts that were found inside the ship are placed in the Viking Ship Museum in Bygdøy in Oslo, it is incredible to witness the grandeur of the burial mound.
Archaeologists have dated the burial of the Oseberg Ship to the year 834.

Slottsfjell is one of the most famous landmarks in Tønsberg. The tower offers excellent views of the town and the green space around it is used for a yearly music festival and a medieval festival every summer.
But this park is not only famous for its energetic festivals in summer. It is also the largest park of ruins in Skandinavia containing numerous remains of the largest 14th-century castle in Norway, Castrum Tunsbergis.
When in Tønsberg a stroll around the park is a must!

While your car is charging, take a stroll through one of the most beautiful and historical areas in Tønsberg with old wooden houses.
This is an underrated area, but so traditional and it will give you a true feel of Norway's idyllic southeast coast.

Pick up your car and head to your hotel to park up for the night.

After checking in at the hotel, take a walk to the dock where you can get a glimpse of the replica of the Oseberg ship found at the Oseberg Mound. It is an incredible resemblance to the original ship and it was built using Viking tools - pretty cool, right?

Walk along the enchanting Tønsberg Harbor to Paparazzi, an incredible restaurant serving a wide variety of meals including mouthwatering pizza. If you have allergies or eat plant-based, just let the staff know and in my experience, they accommodate you with pleasure. If you feel like continuing out for a couple of beers before returning to the hotel, Alshami Restaurant is the perfect place. It has a great atmosphere, especially in the summer months, and makes a top-notch place to round off the day.

Time to retreat at the hotel and wind down for the night. They also have a nice bar at the hotel if you want to have a last quiet drink there before heading back up to your elegant room.
