Westward Expansion History and Animal Sanctuary Visit onto Reno

You first stop is just outside of Elko at the California Trail Center. This modern building houses many exhibits and dioramas about the westward expansion and contributions of emigrants to develop the American identity.
You'll learn about the tragedy of the Donner Party and adventures from the California Gold Rush. You can also hike the surrounding trails, participate in an interpretive program, and get your questions answered by staff.

Head into the town of Winnemucca to the Winnemucca Pizzeria for a lunch break. This hometown pizzeria features all the traditional pizzas, calzones, salads, pastas, and paninis.

Your history tour continues at the Humboldt Museum in Winnemucca, Nevada. The museum has many displays explaining the history and culture of the area. You will see Ice Age remains, cowboy keepsakes, American Indian collection, vintage automobiles, and art nouveau antiques.
You can also explore historic buildings on site such as the Richardson-Saunders house from 1899, an episcopal church built in 1907, and the Greinstein display building from the 1880s.

At this stop, you will visit a non-profit wildlife rehabilitative center, called Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides placement for animals in need. Animal residents come through placement requests and rescues from government and law enforcement agencies, veterinarians, and citizens.
Safe Haven is located on a total of 320 acres with animal residents such as a bobcat, lynx, cougar, lion, black bear, serval, caracal, and more. Tours to meet the residents are offered every day as part of admission.
