After breakfast, drive the short distance through Liege to the stunning Parc Boverie.
Located on an island in the River Meuse, this stunning green park boasts a rose garden, a cybernetic sculpture known as Nicolas Schöffer Tower, and a museum of fine arts showcasing exhibitions from the Renaissance to the present day.
The park - which is free to enter (the museum charges a small entry fee) - is open Monday to Sunday from 6am until 7pm, and parking is available on the island.

After an hour of enjoying the morning light in Liege's beautiful park, it's time to begin your journey back east. The good news is it's a picturesque trip through Belgium's oldest nature reserve, the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Nature Park.
To take a closer look at the surroundings, stop off at this remote brasserie for a coffee and a snack before crossing the border back into Germany.
Note this hidden gem is open 9am until 7pm on weekends, but opens at midday Wednesday to Friday. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

You'll be able to explore Monschau on foot, so park up here and head for the old town, where you'll enjoy your lunch.

Monschau's old town, known as Altstadt, is the perfect place for a romantic post-lunch stroll.
Walk along the river and take in the fabulously-preserved half-timber houses, stroll through its winding cobbled lanes, and take pictures of the medieval castle built by the Dukes of Limburg in the 12th century.

Another must-visit in Monschau is the building that used to be the headquarters of the town's textile industry. The red bricks of Rotes Haus make it the most recognisable building in the town, and its 18th-century history is preserved in the museum inside.
As good as it looks on the outside, the interior is even better. Pay a visit to marvel at the oak staircase, ornate chandeliers, and antique furnishings.

After you've finished your pleasant stroll around Monschau, head back to your car to head north to Aachen.

Aachen is another historic town with much to admire in architecture, cuisine, and culture. But you'll get to all that soon enough. First, it's time to feel refreshed and revitalised at Aachen's thermal baths.
The therapeutic waters of the Carolus Thermen hail from Aachen's mineral springs, waters in which the Romans soothed their aching limbs many years ago. Switch off here for a couple of hours soaking in the “Strokkur” brine steam bath or take some meditation classes at the tranquil Meditarium.

One of the oldest Cathedrals in Europe has the distinction of being among the first 12 items ever listed on UNESCO's presitigious World Heritage list.
Its importance in the history of the Holy Roman Empire was recognised by UNESCO in 1978, nearly 1200 years after construction of its Palatine Chapel began under the Emperor Charlemagne.
Closed to tourists during services, the Cathedral is open 7am until 7pm from April to December, and closes at 6pm from January to March. To arrange a tour, get in touch via the website.

Not only is this restaurant handily located just off route 44 north to Dusseldorf, it's also intriguingly placed in the middle of Aachen's Merzbruck airfield.
Although there are no commercial flights operating from this airport, you will get to enjoy your dinner accompanied by views of local flight school students taking off and landing.
On the menu is a range of hearty soups for starters, while mains include a variety of tasty schnitzel options, a selection of steaks, and a mixed seafood platter for two. There's also outside seating if the pleasant evening tempts you to al fresco dining.
