Beach Shacks and Mountain Restaurants

The small seaside town of L’Isula Rossa has a fabulous colonnaded market in the centre, selling a large range of fresh produce. You could do all your shopping here; from fresh fish and seafood (including live lobsters) to meats and charcuterie, cheeses, wines and honeys, to home-made jams, pastries and biscuits. There are some small cafes here too where you can sit and watch the hustle and bustle. The market is open daily.

From here, it’s an easy 15-minute stroll along the paved road to the lighthouse on the peninsula for some panoramic views of the town and coastline. Also, look out for the ruins of a Genoese tower on the way back.

This is the quintessential beach shack. Firstly, it’s right on the beach. Secondly it seems to be made from bits of old weathered planks. Thirdly, it’s serves great food in takeaway containers! Specialities include langoustine rolls and fish tacos. The desserts, including sundaes and waffles, are also delicious. Grab a cold beer and enjoy a beachside lunch.

The pretty town of Porto is the starting point for a number of boat trips along the coast. This trip will take you around the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring stunningly shaped red rock cliffs plunging into the turquoise sea. The boat will take you up close to these enormous cliffs where you can spot falcons and ospreys. On the journey you’ll also pass by the tiny fishing cove of Ficaghjola, nestled into the cliffs as well as hidden sea caves. Don’t forget to wear your swimsuit as there will be a stop at Capo Rosso natural pool.

In contrast to lunch, dinner is hearty home-cooking, mountain food. The ingredients are locally sourced, and the recipes are traditional. Specialties include goat and wild boar. Get a table on the outdoor terrace for some stunning views.
