Day 3

Greymouth to Franz Josef via Hokitika
Today is quite a long day of driving, but after the cliffy twists and turns of day two and the gorge roads of day one, the straight, fast roads most of the way south from here mean you can cover a lot of ground in relatively less time. Time your day to stop in Hokitika for brunch or lunch. Hokitika is about 30 minutes' drive south of Greymouth.

Walking along steel bridges and platforms suspended high in the forest canopy is a great way of experiencing the West Coast forest. On a clear day, views of the snow-capped Southern Alps can be seen in the distance. From the highest viewing platform you can look across to nearby Lake Mahinapua, where there are also pleasant short walks that may be better suited to anyone with a fear of heights. It's well sign-posted from the highway.

Make it to your ultimate destination, Franz Josef, in the mid-afternoon. The small town here caters well to tourists, with lots of hotels, restaurants, tours companies and the West Coast Wildlife Centre, where you can see kiwis. The main attraction, though, is the Franz Josef Glacier, a short drive from town. There are a number of short walks that take you to viewpoints. Note though that these days, it's not possible to get very close to the glacier on foot. If you want a close-up experience you'll need to take a helicopter tour. These only operate when the weather is favourable.
