Brilliant Bilbao and an Agroturismo Experience

The Guggenheim Bilbao truly brought about a regeneration of the city. Run down and in typical post-industrial slump fashion, Bilbao wasn't on the tourism radar. But when the Guggenheim came to town, there was a renaissance like you've never seen before. Nowadays, the city has just the right amount of polish and functionality, without losing too much of its grit and interest.

A detour up to Mount Artxanda on the funicular is a real treat. Opened in 1915, it takes you up to a beautiful observation point - with very Instagrammable Bilbo / Bilbao signs to boot! Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 07:15 - 22:00; Sunday 08:15 - 22:00

The great thing about eating Pintxos instead of real meals is that you can stop whenever you fancy and always grab a snack. And if you want a bigger meal, just get a variety of Pintxos. Plaza Nueva has a huge array of cafés and bars to choose from - so have a glass of rioja and 1 or 2 pintxos at each place as you follow the sun round the square!

Walk off your pintxos lunch with a walk up the amazing wide staircase, Mallona Galtzada. Part way up you'll find a small archaeology museum, with regional treasures from days gone by. Opening hours: Monday CLOSED; Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 - 14:00 and 16:00 - 19:30; Sunday 10:30 - 14:00.

Take a walk around Mallona Park. There are monuments, gardens and a children's playground too. Bilbao excels itself with amazing views, and Mallona park rewards your efforts up all those stairs with epic vistas.

Built on the site of an old steel mill, Etxebarria parkea is just a bit further up the hill and part of the same park complex. The giant chimney is a nod to the park's history, and makes for an interesting punctuation on the skyline.
If you are travelling with your dog, Etxebarria parkea has a lot of dog-friendly areas.

Depending on whether you are choosing to eat at your Agroturismo accommodations, self catering, or choosing to eat out; there are so many delicatessens, takeaways, pintxos bars, and restaurants on your route back to the carpark. Bilbao is such a tasty city - you really are spoilt for choice.

Amble back along the river, or through the centre of town for shopping opportunities, before returning to your car.
