A Great Day This Has Turned Out To Be

You will start by visiting the old town of Bruges (in French) or Brugge (in Dutch), admiring everything from the top of the Belfort. Then you'll learn about Primitive Flemish artists (who are actually from the pre-Renaissance period) and go inside the tallest cathedral in the city.
After lunch, you will head out to Knokke-Heist, the chicest Belgian coastal resort, to discover the story of what was once a fishermen's hamlet. And you'll have the choice to finish your afternoon with active leisure or relaxing on the beach.

Welcome to Bruges! The historic city centre, which you are about to explore, is pedestrian, so park your vehicle here, and start delving into the medieval city.
Bruges began as a 9th-century stronghold designed to defend the shore from Viking raids. Dominated by the French and subsequently the dukes of Burgundy, Bruges developed into one of Europe's most sophisticated towns and an international commerce center, renowned for its opulence and grandeur.
Today, the city's preeminence is due to the splendor of its historic center, which is dotted with cobblestone roads and flowing canals flanked by medieval structures.

The Belfort of Bruges is an octagonal 83-meter-tall bell tower built during the 13th and 15th centuries. Inside the tower, you will climb 366 stairs to get up to the roof, passing through the treasury chamber, where the town's rights and privileges were held.
It's worth doing the climb to get a closer look at the carillon with its 47 bells and gaze at the Grote Markt below.
The Grote Markt is Bruges' main square, an open space bordered by 17th-century homes and the Belfort on one side. In its center, you can see a monument of Pieter de Coninck and Jan Breydel, the guildsmen who led the Bruges Matins insurrection against the French forces in 1302.

Bruges was the richest, most cosmopolitan, and most cultured city in Northern Europe in the 1400s. With each shipload, new ideas, fads, and painting styles were imported and exported. Beautiful paintings, like expensive clothes or furnishings, became an affordable luxury. Internationally renowned artists established studios in Bruges, creating portraits and altarpieces for affluent European merchants.
Understandably, the Groeninge Museum houses one of the greatest collections of art produced in the region.

Welcome to Knokke-Heist, the trendiest seaside town on the Belgian coast, with its casino, streets lined with trendy boutiques and art galleries, magnificent homes, and select golf courses. Here you might want to spend the night.
The town is, in reality, a 6-kilometer-long conurbation running from Heist in the west to Het Zoute in the east, where expansion is hampered by the dunes of the Zwin natural reserve.
Walk just 5 minutes to get to the Museum of Zwin region, or, if you're more up to strolling along the beach, feel free to do so.
