A Medieval Wine Cellar, a Legend and a Thousand Beautiful Landscapes
Today you'll visit one of the most beautiful villages in the area: Ezcaray, where you'll see ancient looms, a surprising gothic altar, you'll be able to touch an object that is part of a legend and you'll take a walk along a green path next to the river Oja.
Then the village of Zaldierna will transport you back in time and you'll be enchanted by its simple beauty. You will visit a winery with more than 500 years of history and enter the medieval caves where they still preserve their wines.
Then you will ride on horseback through vineyards and landscapes of endless greenery. In the village of El Rasillo de Cameros, apart from letting yourself be carried away by the charm of its small streets, you will also visit a very peculiar museum and all this stopping at the best places to eat the typical delicacies of this region.

- Hello!!
Thank you for choosing this route !
I hope you enjoy it very much.
It's time to get started!
Ezcaray is a well-known place in the area for its beauty, I arrived there by chance and as soon as I got out of the car I fell in love, I'm sure the same thing will happen to you when you start touring it.
This is the only car park in the village. It's small, so if it's full, you're sure to find places to park in the surrounding streets. If you ask the residents where to park, you'll see that they are very kind and helpful.

This church is puzzling. From the outside it looks more like a fortified castle than a church and then inside, you are surprised by the high altar with an altarpiece decorated in an impressive gothic style.
The best way to enjoy your visit is with a guide. I was lucky enough to visit it listening to the explanations of a guide called Ricardo who was fantastic. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Ezcaray and the church, gives very interesting information and is very friendly.
If you visit the church don't forget to call him beforehand to arrange a guide: Ricardo Aransay, phone +34 677 41 89 13. He also gives guided tours in the old town. You can see his website here

This shop is worth a visit, it is no ordinary shop.
In Ezcaray there was an important cloth industry, and this shop, run by a very attentive family, is a testimony to that history with its old looms and the traditional methods they still use today to make blankets, handbags, scarves...
It is very interesting, the blankets are beautiful and some of them are very original. I bought one myself and it has been my faithful companion on the sofa watching a film or two.
Here you can take a look at the web site.
Their opening hours: Monday to Friday: 10:00 - 14:00 h. & 16:00 - 20:00 h. Saturday: 10:00 - 14:00 h. & 16:00 - 20:30 h. Sunday: 10:00 - 14:30 h.

This square is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in the whole town. The houses with porticoes, columns and mardera latticework, the balconies with flowers, everything is so picturesque.
A local told me that there is a legend about a ring on one of the columns of the old town hall, which today is where the tourist office is located. They call it the Royal Charter Ring and the legend has it that if a criminal or thug touched the ring, he could not be prosecuted by the law for some time.
Curious, isn't it?

This square is the must-see of the town.
What amused me the most, was that looking at the map on the navigator, I couldn't find the "Plaza del Quiosco" because its real name is "Plaza Conde de Torremúzquiz"... without a doubt it's much more catchy the "Plaza del Quiosco". And this is so because standing there, the kiosk is undoubtedly the main protagonist.
There was a band playing up there when I first saw the square. I sat down on a terrace of a bar to have a drink, it was already dusk.... It was beautiful.

This beautiful bridge, of medieval origin, is very well preserved.
Although there wasn't much water in the river Oja when I crossed it, I have to admit that I found it picturesque and besides, I have a thing about bridges... I love crossing them!! Especially old ones.
Crossing it will take you to a path for a short walk along the Oja river, very nice and pleasant.

This green path along the river Oja is a pleasant walk. If you continue to the end, at a point it turns away from the river, you have to cross the road and come to the old train station, now a restaurant. There you can cross another bridge to return to the village.

The cuisine of this restaurant is top class, I didn't know that. I just went in because it looked so nice from the outside.
There I tried the Caparrones and the bacalao a la Riojana. Both typical local dishes and they were delicious!
Caparrones are like small red beans, which are typical of the area of La Rioja.
Of course all this washed down with a good wine, a must in a vineyard area.
Opening hours: Closed on Mondays, except August, bank holidays and long weekends. Friday and Saturday: 13:00 - 16:00 & 21:00 - 23:00 h. Sunday to Thursday: 13:00 - 16:00 h.

Zaldierna is very small, you can leave your car at the entrance of the village, it is easy to walk all around.
There is nothing specific to mention, but the group of stone houses, the bridge at the entrance of the village, the narrow cobbled streets, everything in the village is a beautiful composition.
When I went there it was spring and some of the houses were already decorated with flowers that stood out against the texture of the stone. Really beautiful. Besides, as it is not very touristy, you can walk around in peace and quiet and it is a pleasant break.

There are many good wineries in the area, but I am going to recommend you to visit this one, which has not only good wines (they give you the chance to taste 3 wines) but also a lot of history.
Their wines are kept in underground caves that are more than 500 years old, very deep, where they have a constant temperature all year round. Going down to see them is a fantastic experience.
The visit is accompanied by a talk explaining curious facts about the origins of wine production in the area of La Rioja. It is an extraordinary place.
To visit you must book in advance. The visits are for about one hour, usually in Spanish but you can ask them to be in English.
TOURS IN ENGLISH: Monday to Friday at 10:30 h. But check for other times or weekends by email: enoturismo@bodegaslecea.com or by calling +34 685 010 400

You can get to the Old Elm Square by car and park it on the side of the square itself, otherwise you can look for a space in the surrounding area.
The old elm tree that you see, according to the locals, is more than 400 years old and is an emblem for the village.
This square is the heart of the village. From here the best thing to do is to explore and let yourself be carried away by its small streets, admire the old houses with their porches and windows, which you can see adorned with flowers if you arrive in spring or summer.

This is plan B in case the day you visit El Rasillo de Cameros, the Bar Restaurante Cameros is not open.
No... I wasn't suggesting to dine twice (that's why I split the time in two: 45 minutes in each place).
This yacht club also has excellent cuisine, and if it's summer you can have a view of the lake right before the sun goes down.
Here I´ve tried, and they are to die for, the "Riojana" style meatballs and the peppers stuffed with meat... Yes, I am very carnivorous! But the important thing is that these dishes are delicious.
They are open every day from 11:00 to 22:00 h. except Mondays. If you want to make an enquiry or reservation you can call: +34 941 74 64 08
