Exploring the Surroundings of Cosmopolitan Arachova

Situated 45 kilometres north of Athens, the Marathon Dam was one of the most important achievements in Greece during the last century. Built within only three years, from 1926 to 1929, Marathon Lake was the Greek capital's only water supplier by 1959.
At the foot of the dam, you can spot a replica of the Athenian Treasury Temple in Delphi that symbolizes the Athenians' victory at the Battle of Marathon.

Situated in a tranquil location on a slope of Mount Elikonas, the Monastery of Ossios Loukas is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique Middle Byzantine Architecture. The monastery dates back to the 10th century AD, and it was founded by the monk Loukas from Steiris.
In the complex, you can visit two churches. The oldest one stands there since the 10th century AD and is devoted to the Virgin Mary. The second church was built in the 11th century AD. It is the main church of the monastery, and it's called Katholikon. The relics of Ossios Loukas are exhibited in Katholikon. You will be amazed by the mosaics and the crypt of Katholikon.

On your way to Arachova, you will pass through Distomo Village. This small village is known for the massacre committed there by the German Nazis on the 10th of June 1944.
At the Museum of the Nazi Victims, you will learn more about this tragedy that left its mark on Distomo through a photography exhibition and a short documentary film that narrates the events of that dreadful day.
