The Most Beautiful Waterfalls and the Cuckoo Clock Town

The first day of this route will be a mixture of adrenaline and fascination that you will love. First you will go to the biggest waterfalls in Europe, whose power and flow will make you vibrate inside. A boat will take you to a platform to feel the water roaring just a few metres away from you.
Nearby there's a town with many extraordinary things: a very peculiar fortification designed by the artist Albrecht Dürer, facades with frescoes and unique windows and a series of fountains that have nothing to envy to those of Bern.
Next, you will visit the world's most famous city for its cuckoo clocks... Do you know it? There you will look out over the highest waterfalls while mischievous squirrels steal your food. There you will see handcrafted clocks unique in the world and the most enchanting wood carved souvenirs you can imagine. Phew...!! So many things... But just one more thing... You'll sleep in the middle of the forest.... Zzzzzzzzz....

First activity of the route that will fill you with emotion. Seeing this marvellous work of nature up close is something you will never forget!
There are several tours you can do here, I had to do 2 of them because I was travelling with my group of friends and two of them didn't want to climb the huge rock in the middle of the Rhine river. So some of us went on the rock tour (the yellow circuit) and later the whole group went on the blue circuit to enjoy it in a more relaxed way.
If you can do both circuits, each has its appeal: the blue one allows you to admire the ride and the spectacle from a safe distance. While the yellow one fills you with energy and exhilaration as you listen to the thunderous roar of the waterfall so close by.
    These services run from April to October: April 1 to April 30: 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. From 1 May to 31 May: 10:00 to 18:00 h. From 1st June to 31st August: 9:30 to 18:30 h. From October 1st to October 31st: 11:00 to 17:00 h.
Important! The boats operate in sun and rain, please dress appropriately. Remember to book in advance, here is the official website with all the information about the different circuits.
Short blue circuit: lasts 15 minutes. Rock circuit, yellow, lasts 30 minutes. If you can only do one, I recommend the rock circuit, I loved it!!!!
The castle on the opposite bank is an event hall and restaurant, but it can also be seen from the outside and has a glass walkway with magnificent views.
And if you like miniature models, there is a museum nearby that you will love. Here you can see more information and where it's located.

This fortress is one of the things I most enjoyed seeing in Schaffhausen. It was designed by Albrecht Dürer, an artist I admire very much and the first to write down in a book the basics of defensive architecture. This fortress is a sample of his ideas and studies.
Long staircases lead up to the fortress, which is located at the top of the city. Its construction began in 1564 and it took 25 years to complete. You can walk around the inside, at the bottom you will see vaulted galleries and a beautiful spiral ramp that leads to the top. On the central platform of the fortress you can see the beautiful circular tower, which is the main protagonist of the place.
It was a most interesting visit, the views of the city and the river are beautiful.
I know that there are guided tours, but we didn't do it because we looked at the website and saw that they were very long (75 minutes or more) and on top of that there was no language option. If you would like to take a guided tour, here is the link.
Please note that the estimated time for the rest of the day does not include so much time here and you might not make it in time to see other attractions.
Opens daily from 9:00 to 17:00 hs.

This is where we stopped for lunch, the food is very good and the atmosphere is very pleasant.
I recommend you to try the Kronenstuben Schnitzel (Kronenstuben Schnitzel), it's delicious, accompanied by fries, cranberries and lemon... it gives it a unique touch! I loved it!
When we were there, it wasn't very crowded, but just in case, I recommend you book in advance.

Walking along the Vorstadt street I ended up with a sore neck and bumped into more than one person, I kept looking up at the windows, the facades and taking pictures, I was walking at an ant's pace and my friends were overtaking me and I was begging for patience.... hahah!!
By the time I had finished walking down the street I had a good contracture but also a good collection of photos of all those beautiful windows.
Along Vordergasse you will find the Haus zum Ritter, with a very elaborate façade, you won't need to look far.... There you will see great paintings, beautiful frescoes, with scenes that try to transmit the virtues of bourgeoisie life, in fact its name means "house of the gentleman". From what I have read, these frescoes are not the originals, but a reproduction of them. The originals were removed and are now in the Allerheiligen Museum for its preservation.

As you are on the Water Path Route, the medieval fountains that you will see along the streets of this city deserve a chapter on their own.
These fountains began to be decorated from the 16th century onwards with sculptures made of wood or stone and painted (the originals are in the Allerheiligen museum). Each one has a different character, such as the one in Tellbrunnen, which represents the famous William Tell or this one here, the Metzgerbrunnen with the statue of a Swiss mercenary.

If there is one thing that stands out in the main street of this town, famous for its cuckoo clocks, it is the huge shop with 1000 cuckoo clocks and, to avoid any mistakes, it has a gigantic cuckoo clock in front of it, from which a cuckoo bird peeps out every hour... Impossible not to see it!
It is incredible the wonders that can be seen inside. I never thought I would get to see such finely crafted handicrafts.

Well... Get ready for the most beautiful nature show !!!! There are several circuits to do, at the entrance to the resort they will give you a leaflet like this one to choose one. I did (and recommend) the yellow one, it lasts 45 minutes and is full of friendly/thieving squirrels that come looking for food. At the entrance you can also buy a little bag of food to feed them. For us it was an important part of the fun!
The place is open all year round. For more information here is their official website to find out more.

Before arriving at the lake, I recommend you to have dinner here, it is a restaurant with delicious homemade food.
We stopped here without any recommendation (we just saw it on the road) and it was an absolute success.
It's always best to book in advance, especially if it's high season.
The only bad thing is that they have 3 days off per week (we were lucky): Thursday to Saturday open from 14:00 to 01:00 h. Sundays and public holidays open from 11:00 to 21:00 h. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday closed.

Perhaps you will arrive after dark and then you won't be able to see the beauty of the lake in all its splendour. Tomorrow morning, when you see the lake and the dreamlike scenery surrounding it, you will understand why I have suggested this hotel.
Check-in from 15:00 h. Check-out until 11:00 h. It is advisable to notify the hotel staff that you will be arriving late at night.
    Remember to book in advance!
    Have a good night!
