Into the Harz Mountains

Before heading into the Harz mountains for the day, take a stroll to see Wernigerode’s old town market square (Marktplatz) and famous fairy tale town hall (Rathaus). Built in 1420, it was featured on an East German postage stamp in the 1960s and is still used today for civil weddings and municipal offices.

The next stop on today’s itinerary is in the Harz mountains. After parking in the car park, tour the TorfHaus National Park Visitor’s Center to learn about plants and animals native to the Harz. You can also pick up a beverage or snack to enjoy while taking the views.

Next, you’ll hike through the Harz from TorfHaus to the WaldWanderWeg (about 21 minutes one way). Once there you can hike the enjoyable 800 meter long WaldWanderWeg (wilderness path), which aims to show you how the forest changes over time. Then enjoy the hike back to Torfhaus for lunch.

A working mine from the 11th century until the 1980s, the Rammelsberg Ore Mine is now an authentically preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mine is worth a visit because not only is it assumed to be the oldest mine in Europe, it was a major source of innovation. Venture underground to see where and how centuries of minors worked and lived. While guided tours are available, they are currently only offered in German. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
