Lighthouses and Shipwrecks

Take a final look at Walker Bay before you leave Hermanus and set off on the next stage of your road trip.

Gansbaai’s name originated from the wild geese that used to hang around the harbour. Now, you can take a leisurely walk along the beautiful harbour and watch the boats.
If you are looking for more of an adventure, you can do some shark cage diving here. There are several operators in the area offering this service.

The aptly named Danger Point Lighthouse stands on the edge of the peninsula overlooking the rocks responsible for wrecking many ships. Built in 1894, it has a powerful light to warn ships of impending danger.
You can climb up the tower for panoramic views of the surrounding ocean, mountains and fynbos.

This is a restaurant and gift shop which offers delicious breakfasts, lunches as well as cake and coffee. You can shop for décor, jewellery, gifts, household items and more while you wait for your food. The restaurant is a popular spot with visitors to Cape Agulhas and has been around for over 20 years.

The red-and-white Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is situated in the Agulhas National Park, where the two oceans meet, making it the southernmost lighthouse in the African continent. It was also the third lighthouse to be built in South Africa.
Its design is based on the classic Egyptian style. The lighthouse has a gift shop, a restaurant, gift shop and a museum.
Visiting hours: Monday - Sunday: 9 am - 5 pm

Visiting the southernmost tip of Africa can earn you some cool bragging rights. A small monument marks the spot and indicates the respective directions of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
The nearby Map of Africa Monument displays the entire continent and gives you a better perspective of where you are standing.

A 20-minute walk from the southernmost part of Africa, you will see the remains of The Meisho Maru No. 38, a small Japanese fishing boat that was wrecked during a storm in 1982. Much of it has broken apart and been claimed by the sea but the prow is still standing for now.

Go back to the southernmost point of the continent to pick up your car and move on.

The ocean around the Cape Agulhas area is rich in sea life and sea shells, so it makes sense that there would be a sea shell museum here. The museum has a wide variety of shell collections lovingly curated by the owner over two decades and you can learn much about theme here. Also look out for the Magical Mollusc - a gigantic sculpted shell.

Situated on the main road of L’Agulhas, L’Agulhas Seafoods is famous for its fresh seafood. It is said that anything fresher would still be in the ocean! The menu includes hake, calamari, snoek and even sushi. You can choose to eat indoors or outdoors.

Agulhas Ocean House is a bed and breakfast establishment overlooking the ocean and the mountains.
There are just five bright and spacious rooms - each with its own bathroom and outdoor seating area - so be sure to book your accommodation in advance.
