Relaxing Day in Portoroz and Piran
After two days of adventure, unique landscapes and culture, it is time for a day of relaxation. Therefore, the proposal is to drive to the Mediterranean and enjoy a day in Portoroz and Piran.
Both cities have a common past and a close relationship with salt: they are surrounded by salt pans. In Portoroz, a larger town, there is a concentration of beaches and spa hotels, which use salt as their main resource. In the smaller but charming town of Piran, you can stroll through a picturesque old town and learn about its salt-making past. If you travel in August you can even coincide with the salt festival.
Enjoy the spa hotel of your choice, take a bike ride around the salt pans, taste the Mediterranean food and enjoy the coastal walks.

Would you like to learn about the salt-making process, become a salt maker for a day and cycle through the salt pans on a relaxing ride? Don't miss this family visit to the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park.
The park has two sections, which are entered from different places. One is Lera and the other is Fontaniggie. In Lera, salt is obtained as it was in medieval times. Here you can see unique landscapes and enjoy cycling and walking tours. You will also find a visitor centre, baths, a lookout point with a beautiful panoramic view of the Sečovlje salt pans, a shop for buying salt and the only open-air thalassotherapy spa in the salt pans.
Salt production was abandoned in Fontaniggie, but you can visit the Salt Museum and see the abandoned buildings that speak of the salt-making past. It is also the area of the salt pans where there is the greatest variety of natural habitats.
The park can be visited on your own or on a guided tour (the required number of people must be gathered for each guided tour). The guided tour lasts between one and a half and two hours. For more information about the guided tours, please visit this website.
You can see the ticket prices for the park at this link.
To book a bike tour for the family, see this website and write to this email for more information info@goportoroz.si
Open Hours. The park and the salt pans are open all year round, but the opening hours change according to the season. You can see the opening hours on this website Don't forget to bring good shoes, water and sun protection (and some snack).
Note. Another option, if you are not travelling with small children (because it is only for children over 12 years old), is to have a thalassotherapy session at the park's spa. For example, you can check out options such as salt mud wraps, exfoliating massages with sea salt or a relaxing bath in brine, among other proposals. Consult timetables and prices on this website.

After this excursion you can return to the hotel to enjoy a relaxing midday break. This is the hottest time of the day, so there is nothing better than spending it in a relaxation area, with massages and games for the children.
The proposal is that you have lunch in the hotel restaurant and enjoy its facilities.
In the hotel restaurant they prepare healthy meals for adults and children. You can take advantage and order some traditional local food such as sea bass, lubina, (a fish that is cooked with salt) or dishes based on local vegetables.

After several hours of relaxation, you are ready to continue walking. The proposal is to walk along the coast to Piran. If you are with small children, you can drive to this car park and then continue on foot. Another option is to do it all on foot.
Although this last option takes more than 30 minutes, you can do it without any problem with the children because you can stop to look at the sea whenever they want.

Next stop is the beautiful and picturesque Piazza Tartini, an oval square with marble floors and buildings painted in soft pastel colours. The square is named after the composer Guissepe Tartini, who was born in one of the houses surrounding the square and has a statue in his honour.
Soak up the atmosphere of the square, watch the various daily scenes and, if you're with children, let them run around.

The next suggestion is to go up to St. George's Church for a beautiful view of the town of Piran, with its red roofs, its oval square, its walls, its coast and its sea.
If you arrive and the church is closed, you'll still get a good view. If it is open, you can climb up to a viewing platform for very little money (1 or 2 euros).

Then you can walk to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula, where the wind blows stronger and the waves hit the rocks hard. Next to the lighthouse is the small church of San Clemente. You can walk along the coast or through the narrow streets of the old town. This last option is the one I like the most because there is always a daily scene to be photographed.
