Wow, this 4-day route of Slovenia has it all!
The first day proposes to get close to the Alps and get to know life in a shepherd's village. You'll take a cable car up, go hiking, explore the village, talk to the shepherds and even eat a traditional cheese known as “love cheese”.
The second day is an “underground day” because in the morning you will visit the town which has one of the largest mercury mines in the world and in the afternoon you will visit the incredible Postojna Cave, which includes an underground trek and a walk through tunnels and bridges. On this day, you will also visit a castle, more than 800 years old, embedded in the rocks, with an interesting history.
On the third day it's time for some relaxation, cycling through the salt pans, a spa in a hotel in Portoroz and a walk through the beautiful old town of Piran.
On the fourth day, before returning to the capital, you can visit the Kočevje area, home to one of the country's most densely forested areas, which is the home of the brown bear. Will you be able to see it and find its tracks? The day ends at a lake where you can relax, take a dip or do some water sports.
A very complete route! Remember to bring the equipment for each type of activity.
This route is ideal for the summer months of July and August because all the attractions are open, and you can experience the pastoral life on the plain.
It is also a kid-friendly route!

A Medieval Town, a Shepherds' Village and a Turquoise River
Welcome to the first day of the trip! On this first day of the route, you will visit the beautiful city of Kamnik and its surroundings. But first (and if you are interested) you can make a stop at the Arboretum, one of the most important botanical gardens in this part of Europe.
Kamnik is a medieval town overlooking the Kamnik and Savinja Alps. You can walk through its picturesque streets, visit museums and castles. But this town is also the gateway to the Velika planina plateaus, where pastoral life is still practised and the typical cheese called trnič is made.
You can reach these plateaus by cable car and admire the beauty of the place, the shepherds' village and some of their traditional activities. For this, you need to travel in summer, which is why it is recommended to do this route in summer.
At the end of the day and after a few more minutes of driving, you will be in Kamniška Bistrica, where you can take a short trail to a crystal clear turquoise river and have an early dinner in a typical alpine wooden house.
Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes for the trails!

A Mine, a Karst Cave and a Castle in the Mountains
This second day of the tour is also full of amazing places to see!
Start early to reach the town of Idrija. This town is known for having the second-largest mercury mine in the world and for being the oldest centre of hand-woven lace in Slovenia (which is why you'll see it on several souvenirs). It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As the city has several activities to do, the proposal is to focus on those related to mercury.
After lunching on a traditional Slovenian dish, you'll head off to visit two of Slovenia's most famous tourist attractions: the Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle. The visit to both can take more than three hours, so it is advisable to organize your day according to your interests. For example, if you are more interested in seeing the Postojna area, you can choose to visit only one of the two proposed visits at Idrija.
Remember that the itinerary is mainly organized for the months of July and August.
All activities are kid-friendly and the whole family will have a great time.

Relaxing Day in Portoroz and Piran
After two days of adventure, unique landscapes and culture, it is time for a day of relaxation. Therefore, the proposal is to drive to the Mediterranean and enjoy a day in Portoroz and Piran.
Both cities have a common past and a close relationship with salt: they are surrounded by salt pans. In Portoroz, a larger town, there is a concentration of beaches and spa hotels, which use salt as their main resource. In the smaller but charming town of Piran, you can stroll through a picturesque old town and learn about its salt-making past. If you travel in August you can even coincide with the salt festival.
Enjoy the spa hotel of your choice, take a bike ride around the salt pans, taste the Mediterranean food and enjoy the coastal walks.

Lakes and Forests in Kočevje (Home to Brown Bears)
The last day of the route has arrived! And the proposal of the day is to drive to the area of Kočevje, where the so-called Krokar forest is located, one of the greenest and densest areas in Slovenia, and enjoy the nature.
You can go hiking or cycling to see the brown bear and other animals, do some water sports on the lake or relax on its shores.
You should first visit a tourist information point in town (detailed below) so that you have up-to-date information and can organise your day.
Enjoy another of Slovenia's beauties! Have a nice trip!
