The impressive building with its 104-meter-tall tower is visible from miles away. It stands in the middle of the city at the crossing of a historic trade route (Hellweg and Cologne to Bremen). The construction of the church began in the 13th century and was completed in 1454. It was named after the patron of the city, Reinold. Originally it was built as a palatine church in the Ottonian era, but during the latest construction its style changed to Romanesque with a late gothic effect.

In the east you discover a crossing which is adjoined by two bay Gothic Hall chancel with an apse. The apse is higher than the nave. The sacristy is situated between the transept and the chancel.
The vertical effect is determined by the lancet windows and the horizontal effect is emphasized by the double structured windows. The choir is supported by narrow buttresses from outside.
